Mandela Day 2025: Standing Against Gender-Based Violence and Supporting Our Communities

On 18 July 2025, Spectrum Utility Management joined hands with the Greater Tzaneen community to honour Mandela Day through a powerful programme centred on raising awareness about Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and promoting holistic wellbeing. The day symbolised unity, compassion, and the shared responsibility to uplift and protect vulnerable members of society.

The event began with a 3-kilometre walk against GBV, starting at Letaba Hospital and heading to Madala Station in Nkowankowa, before returning to the hospital. This walk served as a public declaration of solidarity — a commitment to breaking the silence, confronting the crisis, and advocating for communities free from violence. We were honoured to be joined by the CFO of Greater Tzaneen Municipality and the CEO of Letaba Hospital, demonstrating strong leadership support for the cause.

Following the walk, participants gathered for awareness sessions focused on GBV prevention, response, and community empowerment. The programme addressed the realities many individuals face and offered practical guidance on recognising abuse, seeking help, and supporting survivors. Importantly, the conversations did not centre on women alone; the sessions also highlighted the experiences of men, encouraging them to speak out, seek help, and remove the stigma associated with leaving abusive environments.

These impactful discussions were led by Ms. Makgobe from the Department of Social Development, whose expertise provided clarity, guidance, and emotional support to those in attendance.

Additional educational talks covered key aspects of oral health, mental wellbeing, the importance of a positive environment, and building trust and confidentiality within workplaces — reinforcing the idea that true community strength comes from overall health, safety, and dignity.

The day concluded with a gesture of warmth and kindness as gifts were handed out in the Maternity and Paediatric wards, celebrating mothers, newborns, and young patients. This act embodied the spirit of Mandela Day — giving, caring, and uplifting.

At Spectrum Utility Management, we believe that social responsibility extends beyond organisational boundaries. Days like these remind us of the power of collective action and the importance of standing together against societal challenges.

We remain committed to supporting communities, driving awareness, and creating environments where safety, dignity, and hope can thrive.
