Mafikeng Local Municipality, in partnership with Spectrum Utility Management, officially launched the Rooftop Solar and Battery Energy Storage System Project, marking an important milestone in advancing sustainable energy solutions and strengthening municipal infrastructure.
The launch ceremony was led by the Mayor of Mafikeng Local Municipality, Cllr Tshepiso Mphehlo, alongside Spectrum Utility Management’s Managing Director, who together cut the ribbon to formally commission the project.
The event was attended by distinguished guests and municipal leadership, including COGTA officials, Chief Whip Mrs Monametsi, Speaker Mrs Gago Mathe, Members of the Mayoral Committee (MMCs), Municipal Manager Adv. Dineo Mongwaketse, and senior municipal managers — all united in celebrating progress toward energy resilience and innovation.
A key highlight of the project’s success was the strong involvement of the Portfolio Committee of Infrastructure, led by MMC Legalatladi. This committee played a central role throughout the project development process, working closely with Electricity Manager Mr City Mokoena to guide planning, coordination, and implementation.
The Rooftop Solar and Battery Energy Storage System represents a strategic advancement toward decentralised energy generation, supporting greater energy stability, cost efficiency, and sustainability for municipal operations. Through projects like this, municipalities are better positioned to reduce reliance on the national grid, enhance service continuity, and move toward long-term energy independence.
