Celebrating Leadership, Collaboration & Growth: SUM at the 10th Annual Invitation to a Cup of Tea

Spectrum Utility Management (SUM) was proud to sponsor the 10th Annual Invitation to a Cup of Tea in Emalahleni, an inspiring gathering that brought women together to celebrate leadership, empowerment, collaboration and growth.

Reaching its tenth year, the event provided an important platform for women from different sectors and backgrounds to connect, share experiences and engage in meaningful conversations about leadership and the opportunities that lie ahead.

For SUM, being part of an initiative that creates space for these conversations was particularly meaningful.

A Conversation About Leadership and Opportunity

Adding to the significance of the occasion, SUM’s Sales & Marketing Director, Ms Tshepiso was honoured to participate as a guest speaker alongside the Director-General of the Mpumalanga Legislature, Mrs. Maggie Skosana, and the Speaker of Emalahleni, Ms. Millicent Shabangu.

Tshepiso Phosa shared her perspective on the importance of leadership and collaboration, while also introducing the audience to some of the innovative opportunities SUM is pursuing within the municipal and energy sectors.

Her message highlighted an important principle: progress happens when people, organisations and institutions work together towards solutions that create lasting value.

The conversation also provided an opportunity to share insights into SUM’s iSUM solutions and the role that prepaid vending can play in helping municipalities strengthen revenue collection while creating opportunities to invest back into essential infrastructure.

From Revenue to Infrastructure Investment

For municipalities, revenue collection is about far more than financial administration.

Sustainable revenue creates the foundation for investment in infrastructure, service delivery and the long-term development of communities in SUM introduces a 5th Utility solution that assists conumers in communities to have free access to Wi-Fi. Tshepiso elaborated that SUM believes that if all communities has access to Wi-Fi, then conumers will have access to information and this will assist to elevate them out of poverty as access to information is power in itself.

Through its iSUM solutions, SUM is focused on creating smarter, more efficient approaches to utility management, helping municipalities unlock opportunities within their existing utility ecosystems.

Tshepiso highlighted how innovation, technology and collaboration can come together to create opportunities that extend beyond immediate revenue generation.

‘’When municipalities are better positioned to collect and manage revenue, they are better positioned to invest in the infrastructure their communities depend on.’’

Looking Beyond Today: Energy Innovation in Eswatini

The conversation also extended beyond municipal vending and revenue opportunities to one of SUM’s exciting energy initiatives the SCO₂ Supercritical Power Generation Plant project in Eswatini.

This pioneering project represents SUM’s broader vision for exploring innovative approaches to energy generation and security.

The project aims to contribute towards lower electricity tariffs, improved energy security and the potential to wheel electricity into South Africa.

SUM, innovation is not simply about introducing new technology. It is about asking how that technology can contribute to practical, sustainable solutions for communities, municipalities and the broader region.

The SCO₂ project is an example of this forward-thinking approach , exploring new possibilities in energy while looking at how regional collaboration can create wider impact.

Creating Space for Women to Lead

At the heart of the Invitation to a Cup of Tea, however, was its celebration of women.

Tshepiso stated that ‘’leadership takes many forms. It can happen in the workplace, in government, in business, in communities and within families. It can be visible from a stage or happen quietly behind the scenes.’’

What matters is creating environments where women have the opportunity to lead, learn, connect and grow through collaborations and expanding their network.

We believe that meaningful transformation is strengthened when diverse voices are brought into the conversation and when women are given platforms to share their knowledge, experiences and ideas across the spectrum.

More Than a Sponsorship

It was about supporting conversations that extend beyond the room and contribute to the way we think about leadership, innovation and community development.

And it was about celebrating the women who continue to make an impact in their respective spaces.

As SUM continues to grow, we remain committed to supporting initiatives that create opportunities, strengthen communities and encourage collaborations that are impactful to various communities across SADEC.

Because when we create space for people to connect, share and lead, we create space for maximisation and excellence, brining service delivery is our key mandate as Spectrum Utility Management.
